Kenya National Lottery Board (NLB) Alerts Public to Lottery Scams

The National Lottery Board (NLB) has warned the Kenyan public about fraudulent online activities.

In recent weeks, the NLB has identified a surge in fraudulent online activities targeting the public. Scammers are unlawfully using the Board’s official name, logo, and even the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Kenya to create a false sense of legitimacy. These deceptive pages are designed to promote non-existent lottery applications, fabricate “winners,” and offer fake bonuses to unsuspecting individuals.

The Board has explicitly clarified that there are currently no active games, as the National Lottery Board has not yet launched any lottery, game, or mobile application. Additionally, no lottery operator has been licensed or officially appointed to conduct business at this time. As a result, since there are no active games, no prizes, winnings, or bonuses are being awarded or paid out currently.

To stay safe, the NLB recommends that the public avoid unauthorized apps by not downloading any mobile application claiming to be the “official” National Lottery, as these are often used to harvest data or infect devices with malware. The public should also guard their information by keeping personal and financial details private, as a legitimate government body will not ask for sensitive credentials through unofficial social media channels.

Notably, never pay to “win,” as requests for upfront fees are major red flags for scams, there is no requirement to send money or pay any fee to claim a prize from the National Lottery. If you are asked for money to “release” winnings, it is a clear sign of fraud.

For any updates regarding the launch of games or the appointment of operators, the board urges everyone to visit the official website of the National Lottery Board at www.nlb.go.ke.
